If you can rely on 1 woman to say what she thinks about dating it’s Katy Horwood. No pussy footing around, Katy says it how it is where others skirt around the issue. A former matchmaker herself, Katy found her true passion was in writing. Now a successful dating writer and blogger, she spends her days putting the world of dating to rights and of course, speaks at the Matchmaker Academy Bootcamps. Here Katy gives us the low down on her work…
Katy how would you sum up what you do?
I’m a writer focusing predominantly on dating and relationships, through many years of investigating, discussing and reporting the subject I’m also known as a ‘dating industry expert’ – although my tagline is ‘do as I say not as I do’ – make of that what you will!
What path did you take to what you’re doing now?
I started writing a blog all sweetness and life seven years ago, it was about my personal dating experiences, after a year or so I developed it to become more about dating in general and from there it grew. As a consequence of the blog growing and becoming more recognised, I was approached by a number of different sites and publications to write for them.
Today I continue to write my blog and regularly contribute to The Huffington Post and Metro, Amongst a number of other online sites including Female First, The Sun, The Independent, Time Out and The Mirror – I also speak regularly on the subject both at live events and on the radio, most regularly LBC and Radio 5 Live.
Have you had to overcome any challenges on the way?
The ability to get people to pay for your work!! Unfortunately writing is something you’ve got to love doing because you definitely don’t go into it for the money! Joking apart, blogging/writing is such a competitive industry I’d say the main hurdle initially is sticking with it when sometimes it feels like you are one of millions and nobody is reading your work! That, and finding new material daily, when a subject is so niche and you’re writing about it everyday sometimes daily inspiration can prove challenging.
What’s your favourite part of being a dating writer?
The variety, and the sense of achievement and satisfaction when a piece is well reiceved. Knowing that nearly thousands of people enjoy your work everyday is very rewarding – and despite writing being quite isolating, I’ve actually built up a great network of friends though the dating industry, and created some new friendships and working relationships with a great many people on social media.
Do you have any ‘stand out’ moments?
Probably having a blog post re-tweeted by Piers Morgan! ha, actually whenever I’m approached to write/speak about dating and relationships I feel proud of what I have achieved and how I have grown my ‘brand’.
Any funny/crazy things you’ve seen/done along the way?
Plenty!! Writing about dating, I regularly hear crazy anecdotes about first dates bad sex, ex boyfriends etc – there’s never a dull moment in this industry!
What do you enjoy most about being a guest speaker at the Matchmaker Academy bootcamps?
The Matchmaker Academy is such a great event, intimate enough to feel personal but with enough input to really feel like you come away with some valuable information and tools to prepare you to become a successful matchmaker. I think I most enjoy meeting the people on the course, it takes a certain type of person to become a matchmaker and there is a real sense of that at the Academy – always a fantastic, and inspiring bunch.
Any words of wisdom for people looking to get into matchmaking / the dating industry?
Just go for it! There really isn’t a better start than getting the inside information from the Academy, and I would say from there you have everything you need to create a thriving business – so the key is to get cracking, it’s an awesome industry and will provide you with a fulfilled, varied and exciting career!
